LECTIONARY INTRODUCTION |
(Earlier studies have been removed--Sept. 11 2002.)
Welcome to this study of the Lectionary texts from the Common Revised Lectionary for the Sundays through Christ the King Sunday, 2002.
We have two main audiences for the study of these lectionary readings. One audience is made up of ministers who weekly read, study, meditate upon, and preach from one or more of the lectionary texts. The other audience consists of members of the congregations who hear the lectionary texts read in worship, who share in the hymns and prayers, and who listen to the preaching. The ministers can conduct their services more meaningfully if they are assured that members of the congregation have also studied the texts, and the members can worship more adequately if they have given attention to the same texts. So this study is aimed at both audiences, in the hope that the worship of all concerned will be enhanced by it.
How to proceed? I propose, first, to analyze all the texts that we will study during this time. Then we will look at the books of the bible most used during this period. We will consider then some of the major themes raised by these texts, and finally we will deal with each text in turn.
